The phone wouldn’t stop ringing.

It was the fifth day since Margaret Collins had walked out of her son Daniel’s house in Scottsdale, Arizona, and she had not answered a single call.

Each buzz on the small nightstand vibrated against the framed photograph of her late husband, Arthur, and she simply watched the screen light up with Daniel’s name, then Rebecca’s, then the landline from an area code she knew all too well.

She let it ring and ring, her hands folded calmly in the lap of her simple housedress, a steaming cup of tea beside her in the modest little apartment she now called home.
