My Daughter Told Me to Take the Bus in the Rain—So I Reminded Her Whose Car It Really Was

I have lived in this old Springfield house for over forty years, ever since my husband Richard passed, and if you asked me what my life has been about, I would tell you it’s been about thread and love.

For as long as I can remember, I have sat at my Singer sewing machine, my back curved like a question mark, hemming trousers for neighbors, mending school uniforms for children who couldn’t afford new ones, and stitching together the fabric of a community that sometimes forgot to say thank you.

I never minded.

Work was my prayer, and my daughter Jessica was my answered prayer.
