My Mother Struck My Son Over a Toy Car — She Never Knew He Already Owned the House

The day my own mother struck my six-year-old son across the face, something inside me went quiet and cold forever.

It happened over a toy car. A cheap little red car with a squeaky wheel and paint chipped off the hood.

But that car was the last gift my husband ever placed in our son’s hands before he passed away.

It was Sunday lunch at my mother’s house in Cedar Falls, just past two in the afternoon. The rice was still steaming, and the soda was sweating on the table.

My nephew Aiden reached clear across Eli’s plate and snatched the red car right out of his hand.
