“The night of Clara’s accident was not an accident. I am the one who arranged it.”

The paper trembled.

“I paid a man to cut the brake line on her car. I told myself I only meant to frighten her, to give her a reason to leave you and run back to her little town. I told myself I did not mean for the bridge.”

Clara’s knees gave out, and she sank into the leather chair, clutching her son.

“She tried to kill me,” Clara whispered. “All this time. It wasn’t fate. It wasn’t rain. She did this.”

Ethan could not even look up from the page.
