Because the storm Clara thought she had finally outrun did not come back through a courtroom this time, or a stolen child, or a black-bordered letter.

It came back through her own body, on an ordinary Sunday morning, in the warm yellow light of the Caldwell kitchen.

The months after the courthouse had been the closest thing to peace Clara had ever known.

Autumn had come to the mountains, and the whole estate turned gold and red, and the children had learned to jump in the leaf piles the groundskeeper raked along the garden paths.
