They shared that same impossible gentleness.
From inside the car, the door clicked open.
Noah had woken, and he climbed out before anyone could stop him, padding up the path in his sock feet.
He stopped a few steps away and stared at the little girl.
The little girl stared back.
“Are you my sister?” Noah asked.
Grace looked at him, then at Clara, then at Margaret, and the whole impossible weight of it settled over the porch like the morning fog.
“I think so,” Grace said.
Noah’s face split into the biggest smile Clara had ever seen on him.
“I knew it,” he breathed. “I told everybody you were waiting. Just like Mommy was.”
And that was when Margaret began to truly weep.
Not the panicked tears of a moment ago, but something deeper, the sound of a woman whose heart was breaking and somehow, impossibly, breaking open at the same time.
