Clara stared into her cup.
“I’m her mother,” she said. “I carried her. And she looks at me like I’m a kidnapper. Like I’m the one who stole her.”
Her voice cracked.
“Maybe to her, I am.”
Ethan reached across the table and took her hand, the way he always did.
“Two years ago, Noah didn’t know your face either,” he said. “But his heart knew you. It just took time for the rest of him to catch up.”
Clara wanted to believe that.
But Noah had been a baby when she vanished, too young to grieve, too young to bond with anyone else.
Grace had spent every day of her short life loving another woman.
You cannot ask a two-year-old to simply unlove the only mother she has ever known.
And Clara would not have wanted to, even if she could.
That was the cruelest knot of it all.
