Her voice dropped to almost nothing.
“For the first time in my whole shallow life, I loved somebody more than myself. And I have nothing to give him. No money, no home, no name worth anything. I have been so afraid, every single day, that I would fail the one good thing I ever did.”
Clara looked at this woman, the proud, glittering creature who had once dripped contempt, now hollowed down to nothing but a frightened guardian of a child who was not her own.
And Clara understood something that turned her own old anger to dust.
“You did exactly what I did,” Clara said quietly.
Vanessa looked up.
“You took in a child who needed you, when no one else would,” Clara went on. “You loved someone the world said wasn’t yours to love. Vanessa, that’s the whole story of this entire house.”
Vanessa shook her head, the tears coming again.
